Maasi-kaai



Botanical name - Quercus infectoria OLIV.
Sanskrit name   - Majuphal
English              - Oak Gall
Tamil                 - Maasikkai
Used in              - Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and modern medicine

It is called Oak Gall. It is neither a plant nor a tree. It is a result of a metamorphosis process. They are produced when the leaves of Quercus infectoria (a type of oak tree) are penetrated by stinging wasp (Cynips Gallaetinctoriae), who lays eggs in it. It causes a chemical reaction in the leaves to produce this galls.  

The oak galls are rich in tannin, tannic acid, anti-oxide, vitamin A and C, gallic acid, calcium, iron, fiber, protein and carbohydrate. It also contains elements of astringency, anti-microbes and anti -inflammatory. 

Tannins in Maasikkai is widely used in healing external tissue damage and tightening the vagina musle after childbirth.
